Today the official language of the United States and most of Canada is English. However, F
rench almost became the official language because of a war.

The French and Indian War was fought between 1754 and 1763. The name of this war is not accurate because the war was actually between England and France. The Indians fought on the side of the French.

France and England were trying to gain control of North America. France held Canada, and England held part of what is now the United States. However, France tried to expand its land by moving southward into New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia. When the French built a fort on the Ohio, River, the residents in Virginia sent George Washington to attack the fort in 1754. However, the French defeated Washington.

The French, aided by the Indians, outsmarted the English and won many early battles. Later, the British began to do well against the French. In the final battle in Quebec, Canada, General Wolfe of England faced General Montcalm from France. Both generals died in this battle, but the English outlasted the French and won the battle. Thus, most of North America today has the English culture and language.

The word "gain" in Para. 3 means ______.

A.get

B.buy

C.lose

D.sell

Inthefallof1924ThomasWolfe,freshfromhiscoursesinplaywritingatHarvardjoinedtheeightortenofu

In the fall of 1924 Thomas Wolfe, fresh from his courses in play writing at Harvard joined the eight or

ten of us who were teaching English composition in New York University. I had never before seen a man

so tall as he, and so ugly. I pitied him and went out of my way to help him with his work and make him

feel at home.

His students soon let me know that he had no need of my protectiveness. They spoke of his ability to

explain a poem in such a manner as to have them shouting with laughter or struggling to keep back

their tears, of his readiness to quote in detail from any poet they could name.

Indeed, his students made so much of his power of observation that I decided to make a little test and

see for myself. My chance came one morning when the students were slowly gathering for nine o‘clock

classes.

Upon arriving at the university that day, I found Wolfe alone in the large room which served all the

English composition teachers as an office. He did not say anything when I asked him to come

with me out into the hall, and he only smiled when we reached a classroom door and I told him

to enter alone and look around.

He stepped in, remained no more than thirty seconds and then came out. “Tell me what you see.”

I said as I took his place in the room, leaving him in the hall with his back to the door. Without the

least hesitation and without a single error, he gave the number of seats in the room, pointed out

those which were taken by boys and those occupied by girls, named the colors each student was

wearing, pointed out the Latin verb written on the blackboard, spoke of the chalk marks which the

cleaner had failed to wash from the floor, and pictured in detail the view of Washington Square from

the window.

As I rejoined Wolfe, I was speechless with surprise. He, on the contrary, was wholly calm as he

said, “The worst thing about it is that I‘ll remember it all.”

What is the passage mainly discussing?

A. Thomas Wolfe‘s teaching work.

B. Thomas Wolfe‘s course in playwriting.

C. Thomas Wolfe‘s ability of explaining.

D. Thomas Wolfe‘s genius.

Black Americans have served with honor in every American military action, though this fact
if often omitted in history books. Even though black men almost had to beg to be al- lowed to serve in the Revolutionary War, they went on to serve well. Two blackmen, Oliver Cromwell and Prince Whipple, were with Washington when he crossed the Delaware on Christmas Day, 1776, to attack the British at Trenton. A black man named Estabrook captured the Royal Army's general Prescott Newport, and Peter Salem, a black, killed Major Pitcairn as he was savoring his expected victory at Bunker Hill.

Even though they were forced to serve in separated units, black soldiers distinguished themselves in combat. This was despite the fact the whites had long believed that blacks could neither command nor use firearms. In 1863, William Carney of the Massachusetts Colored Infantry received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his role in battles with the Plains Indians. Isaiah Dorman, Coster's black scout, served and died at the Little Big Horn in 1876. Henry Flipper was the first black graduate of West Point in 1877.

In World War I, 40,000 black American combat soldiers served with the French command. Neither U.S. nor British commanders would use these men. But Henry Johnson and Needham Roberts, soldiers in the 369th Infantry's black “Hellfighters” were still the first Americans to win the Croix de Guerr, France's top military award.

During World War II over 600,000 black men and women served in the armed forces, including some 400,000 who served overseas. Dorie Miller, a black mess attendant in navy, was one of our first heroes in this war. At Pearl Harbor during the Japanese sneak attack, he manned a machine gun and shot down four planes. The black fighter pilots of Benjamin Davis, Jr. distinguished themselves throughout the war. They served most courageously during the Italian campaign. During the war in Vietnam, mainly because of civil rights pressures in America but also owing to the fine record of black military units, all American forces were fully integrated. Once again blacks played vital roles. And 13. 2 percent of all war deaths were of blacks, even though blacks constitute only 11 percent of all Americans. Black American soldiers continue to serve their land well.

The main idea this passage is that______.

A.black Americans made contributions in the Revolutionary War

B.black Americans have admirably served their country in at least five wars

C.black Americans suffered a larger portion of war deaths in Vietnam than did any other minorities

D.black Americans served under the French command in World War I
