American Blacks experienced a revolution after 1945, a revolution in expectations. Followi
ng World War Ⅱ, the steady movement toward first-class citizenship for Black people quickened, with significant actions taking place in courts of law, in voting booths, in restaurants and in the streets of the nation.

A decade of intense civil rights activity was launched in 1954 when the United States Supreme Court declared segregated schools to be unconstitutional. In 1955, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , effectively organized the Blacks of Atlanta, Georgia, in a bus boycott. The boycott lasted two years, and when it was over, Blacks no longer were degraded by being forced to sit or stand in the rear of buses.

In 1960, a group of Black college students decided that they, sis well as white persons, had the right to eat at a lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. This sit-in sparked an aggressive national movement and, in the next few years, thousands of young men and women -- Black and white, North and South -- overturned local laws and customs that had maintained segregation. Sit-ins, prayins, freedom rides, freedom marches and demonstrations to open all schools to Black children took place across the nation.

Several important actions took place to change the status of black people ______.

A.after World War Ⅱ

B.in 1954

C.before 1945

D.in 1960

Hemingway was born in Illinois, his family took him as a boy on frequent hunting and fishi
ng trips and so acquainted him early with the kinds of virtues (美德) such as courage and endurance, which were later reflected in his fiction (文学作品) . After high school, he worked as a newspaper reporter and then went oversea to take part in World War I. After the war he lived for several years in Paris, where he became part of a group of Americans who felt strange from their country. They considered themselves a lost generation. It was not long before he began to publish the powerful novel "The Sun Also Rises". His subjects were often war and its effects on people, or contests, such as hunting or bullfighting, which demand stamina and courage.

Hemingway's style. of writing is striking. His sentences are short, his words simple, yet they are often filled with emotion. A careful reading can show us, furthermore, that he is a master of the pause. That is, if we look closely, we see how the action of his stories continues during the silences, during the times his characters say nothing. This action is often full of meaning. There are times when the most powerful effect comes from restraint (适度). Such times occur often in Hemingway's fiction. He perfected the art of expressing emotion with few words.

The word "stamina" in the last line of paragraph 1 can most probably be replaced by______.

A.money

B.time

C.energy

D.weapon

Scientists discovered that atoms of some substances are radioactive. This means that they
are unstable and can be split. The chain of splitting atoms releases great destructive energy and it was this discovery which led scientists to develop the idea of an atomic bomb. The American government secretly worked to produce such a bomb and the first version was much more powerful than anyone had thought.

By this time, the World War II had ended in Europe. But the Japanese refused to surrender, the Americans decided that by dropping an atomic bomb on Japan, they could end the war quickly and save more of their soldier’s lives.

Soon after midnight on 6 August 1945, a bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, a civilian target. No warning was given and there was total devastation. Almost all the buildings were destroyed and more than 100000 people died or were horribly wounded.

The Japanese military still did not want to surrender so three days later, the Americans dropped a second atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki, killing 45000 people. The Japanese government was discussing ending the war when they heard the news of Nagasaki. Finally, they surrendered and the World War II came to an end.

The first atomic bomb ______.

A.was less powerful

B.was dropped in Nagasaki
