The Marlow Fashion Group had been set up by a husband and wife team in the 1970s in an economically depressed
part of the UK. They produced a comprehensive range of women’s clothing built round the theme of traditional English
style. and elegance. The Group had the necessary skills to design, manufacture and retail its product range. The
Marlow brand was quickly established and the company built up a loyal network of suppliers, workers in the company
factory and franchised retailers spread around the world. Marlow Fashion Group’s products were able to command
premium prices in the world of fashion. Rodney and Betty Marlow ensured that their commitment to traditional values
created a strong family atmosphere in its network of partners and were reluctant to change this.
Unfortunately, changes in the market for women’s wear presented a major threat to Marlow Fashion. Firstly, women
had become a much more active part of the workforce and demanded smarter, more functional outfits to wear at work.
Marlow Fashion’s emphasis on soft, feminine styles became increasingly dated. Secondly, the tight control exercised
by Betty and Rodney Marlow and their commitment to control of design, manufacturing and retailing left them
vulnerable to competitors who focused on just one of these core activities. Thirdly, there was a reluctance by the
Marlows and their management team to acknowledge that a significant fall in sales and profits were as a result of a
fundamental shift in demand for women’s clothing. Finally, the share price of the company fell dramatically. Betty and
Rodney Marlow retained a significant minority ownership stake, but the company had had a new Chief Executive
Officer every year since 2000.

(b) Details relating to construction of Apex’s new store:
Apex issued a $10 million unsecured loan with a coupon (nominal) interest rate of 6% on 1 April 2009. The loan is redeemable at a premium which means the loan has an effective fi nance cost of 7？5% per annum. The loan was specifi cally issued to fi nance the building of the new store which meets the defi nition of a qualifying asset in IAS 23. Construction of the store commenced on 1 May 2009 and it was completed and ready for use on 28 February 2010, but did not open for trading until 1 April 2010. During the year trading at Apex’s other stores was below expectations so Apex suspended the construction of the new store for a two-month period during July and August 2009. The proceeds of the loan were temporarily invested for the month of April 2009 and earned interest of $40,000.
Required:
Calculate the net borrowing cost that should be capitalised as part of the cost of the new store and the fi nance cost that should be reported in the income statement for the year ended 31 March 2010. (5 marks)
Books are steadily increasing in size: the average number of pages has grown by 25% over the last 15 years. A study of more than 2500 books appearing on New York Times bestseller reveals that the average length has increased from 320 pages in 1999 to 400 pages in 2014. There is some relationship between age and children’s characteristic reaction to divorce. As the child grows older, the greater is the likelihood of a free expression of a variety of complex feelings, an understanding of those feelings, and a realization that the decision to divorce cannot be attributed to any one simple cause. Furthermore, the adjustment problems of boys are still noticeable even two years after the divorce. Girls’ adjustment problems are usually internalized rather than acted out, and are often resolved by the second year after the divorce. However, new problems may surface for girls as they enter adolescence and adulthood. How can the relatively greater impact of divorce on boys than on girls be explained？ The greater male aggression and noncompliance may reflect the fact that such behaviors are tolerated and even encouraged in males in our culture more than they are in females. Furthermore, boys may have a particular need for a strong male model of self-control, as well as for a strong disciplinarian parent. Finally, boys are more likely to be exposed to their parents’ fights than girls are, and after the breakup, boys are less likely than girls to receive sympathy and support from mothers, teachers, or peers.
