第2题
If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are proba
bly a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year. A famous scientist concluded that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities, and that cool weather is much more favourable for creative thinking than in summer heat. This does not mean all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large members of people tend to be lowest in the summer.

Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Autumn is the next best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking.

Generally speaking, it is far fitter for creative thinking when the weather is ______ .

A.sunny and fine

B.windy and rainy

C.warm and wet

D.neither cold nor hot

Do other animals besides humans cry? The answer to the question is ‘Yes, and no’. All
animals with mobile eyes have the ability to cry, just as we humans do. They have a tearing system that keeps their eyes wet so as to protect them from dry sand, dusts, and other elements. People often tell tales of animals such as elephants and dogs weeping when punished. However, even if such an animal does shed tears, there is no scientific evidence that the animal is expressing the tear-related emotions similar to those when humans cry. But what about when a baby chimp or ape whimpers and screams when it’s being separated from its mother, can we say with some certainty that the animal is crying? Taking away the babies does encourage care-giving such as feeding and protecting from the mother apes, but it is uncertain whether the baby apes feel the same way as baby humans do when they cry. In fact, it’s not clear that crying and other emotional displays mean exactly the same thing to all humans. For instance, there is a wide range of emotions that prompt people to cry, and some kinds of weeping, such as crying at a stranger’s wedding, seem to be cultural responses. In addition, some people are autistic. That means they prefer being alone than being with other people, especially in large crowds. These people are said to have less ability in expressing their emotions, but research also has shown that it’s more that their expressions and their reactions to the emotional expressions of others are unusual. Different. But does that mean that their sadness is different somehow? So even if apes can be said with some certainty to be feeling emotions, then there is the problem of figuring out to what extent what they feel resembles what humans feel.

Thetrickinfoodphotographyistoshowthefoodlookingfresh,somanydisheshavestand-ins,justasmovie

The trick in food photography is to show the food looking fresh, so many dishes have

stand-ins, just as movie stars do. “When I get my lights and cameras set up, I remove the

stand-in and put in the real thing,” explains Ray Webber, who photographs food for magazine

advertisements. “Sometimes I have to brush the meat with its juices because it may have dried out

a bit. A and when I‘m shooting (拍照) something like tomatoes, I always carry water to spray them with dew just before I shoot.”

Shooting food outdoors has special problems. “I‘m always worrying about flies or worms crawling up

a glass,” Webber explains, “my worry is that someday a dog will come up from behind and run off

with the food.” Once Webber was shooting a piece of cheese outdoors and needed something to make

its color beautiful. Finally he found it: a weed with lovely blue flowers. When the shot appeared,

several people were horrified-the weed was deadly nightshade!

Just before being photographed, some meats and vegetables are _______.

A. fanned

B. dyed

C. frozen

D. made wet

In this part there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each
with four suggested answers. Choose the one that you think is the best answer. Mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET by drawing with a pencil a short bar across the corresponding letter in the brackets. Watercolor is the oldest painting medium known. It dates back to the early cave dwellers who discovered they could add lifelike qualities to drawings of animals and other figures on the wails of caves by mixing the natural colors found in the earth with water. Fresco, one of the greatest of all art forms, is done with watercolor. It is created by mixing pigments and water and applying these to wet plaster. Of the thousands of people who stand under Michlangelo's heroic ceiling in the Sistine Chapel, very few are aware that they are looking at perhaps the greatest watercolor painting in the world. The invention of oil painting by the Flemish masters in the fifteenth century led to a decline in fresco painting, and for the next several centuries watercolor was used mainly as a medium for doing preliminary sketches or as a tool for study. It was not until the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that English painters reinstated watercolor as a serious art form. The English have a notorious love for the outdoors and also a great fondness for small, intimate pictures. The subdued tones of watercolor had a remarkably strong appeal for them. What is the main theme of the passage?A.The decline of fresco painting.B.The predominance of oils over watercolor.C.The rediscovery of watercolor in England.D.The origins and development of watercolor.
