The National Union of Students (NUS) welcomes the news that greater numbers of black and disabled students are studying at UK universities, but there is still a lot of work to be done on widening access, writes the union's president, Gemma Tumelty.

A recent Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) equalities review showed that significant numbers of potential students felt their disability was (1)to accessing higher education (HE). This is simply unacceptable.

Equality and diversity is not entirely a “numbers game” and before too much praise is given we need to hear more from (2), not just about their experience of accessing higher education but also going through the system.

Equality in society is absolutely, and fundamentally, linked to(3).

(4), university is the place where they will be first exposed to different cultures and (5). As well as fighting for better access, the NUS wants to see diversity properly valued and promoted within the student experience. Many pay lip service to the value of diversity, but is this recognized and promoted as a core asset to those who go through the HE system?

Equality in society can be promoted by equality and diversity at university. But the benefits of university as a positive, diverse environment must be seen by students as adding “value” as much as any other factors before the numbers game is really won by the champions of diversity.

第7题
There was a time when, if a lady got onto a crowded bus or train, a gentleman would immedi
ately stand up and offer her his seat. Today a gentleman will probably look out of the window or hide behind his newspaper. Either way, the lady will have to stand until someone gets off.

You can' t entirely blame men for this change in manners. The days are gone when women could be treated as the weaker sex. A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men; not just equality in jobs or education, but in social attitudes. Hold a door open for some women and you're likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as inferiors, unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for a meal and she'll probably insist on paying her share of the bill.

It' s no wonder, then, that men have given up some of the gestures of politeness and consideration which they used to show towards women. On the other hand, man' s politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs and feelings of women, so that men can see women as equal human beings.

What do gentlemen now do when a lady gets on a crowded bus or train?

A.They will stand up reluctantly.

B.They will offer her their seats after a while.

C.They will pretend not to see her.

D.They will get off the bus.

听力原文: At the end of the total accounting period and after all transactions have been journalized and posted, the equality of the debit and credit entries is checked by preparing a trial balance. A trial balance is a schedule that lists the titles of the accounts in the general ledger and their debit or credit balances. If the trial balance is in balance, the financial statements can be prepared. If a trial balance does not agree, it implies that an error or errors have been made. The account balances, postings and the journal entries must be checked until the error is found. A trial balance does not prove that all transactions have been recorded or that the ledger is correct. The trial balance may still agree when a transaction is not journalized, a journal entry is not posted, an entry is posted twice, incorrect accounts are used in journalizing or posting, or offsetting errors are made in recording the amount of a transaction.

24. How does the accountant check the equality of the debit and credit entries?

25.What is a trial balance?

26.What is implied if a trial balance does not agree?

(24)

A.By posting all the entries.

B.By preparing a trial balance.

C.By comparing the entries on both sides.

D.By recording all the entries once more.
