Contrary to what many people believe, highly intelligent children are not necessarily

Contrary to what many people believe, highly intelligent children are not necessarily bound to have an academic success. In fact, so-called gifted students may fail to do well because they are unusually smart. Ensuring that a gifted child reaches his or her potential requires an understanding of what can go wrong and how to satisfy the unusual learning requirements of extremely bright young people.

One common problem gifted kids face is that they, and those around them, place too much importance on being smart. Such an emphasis can breed a belief that bright people do not have to work hard to do well. Although smart kids may not need to work hard in the lower grades when the work is easy, they may struggle and perform. poorly when the work gets harder because they do not make the effort to learn. In some cases, they may not know how to study, having never done it before. In others, they simply cannot accept the fact that some tasks require effort.

If the scholastic achievement of highly intelligent children remains below average for an extended period, many teachers will fail to recognize their potential. As a result, such students may not get the encouragement they need, and may further be depressed to learn. They may fall far behind in their schoolwork and even develop behavior. problems. Boys may turn aggressive or become class clowns(小丑).Girls often develop performance anxiety and other symptoms such as stomachaches.

One way to avoid such difficulties is to recognize that IQ is just one of the elements for success. Children do well or struggle in school for a host of reasons apart from IQ, according to psychologist Franz Monks of the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands. These include motivation and persistence, social competence, and the support of family, educators and friends. Emphasizing the importance of persistence and hard work, for example, will help a child avoid the laziness trap. Gifted children also need intellectual challenges-to teach them how to work hard.

C. clever students require more intelligence than hard work

One friend once said to me, "Do you know that most college students can't even put semi-co
lons(分号) in the right place?" Emphatic voices like his have recently made writing courses popular, strangely popular because of their hard-nosed attitude toward correct writing. Most administrators and teachers extend this medicinal metaphor (隐喻), they agree that students are suffering from a serious disease. Many tests identify increasing numbers of student writers as skills cripples (跛子), and they need treatment. Remedial courses are given everywhere. More writing labs are appearing and expanding.

Many students are willing to believe that there is really something wrong with them. More students than ever before tell me and my colleagues that they are indeed bad writers and need lots of help with grammar and punctuation. I feel like a doctor, my job is to diagnose (诊断) the disease and prescribe cures whenever I read student writing, It would be easy enough for me to circle spelling errors, cross out unnecessary commas, line out wordy sentences. And knowing that this sort of marking can sting, I would of course write, onto the end of the paper, something about how I know the student really tried hard, something about his rich imagination or his clear potential for doing well.

But I wonder whether all these well-intentioned scrawls (潦草写几句话) would do little more than confirm my student’s fears about how crippled he is.

According to the passage, a "skills cripple" is someone who ______. ()

A.is seriously ill

B.has a rich imagination

C.is a bad writer

D.has a serious injury to the leg

Silent Listening

If something bad just happened (happen) to your friend, what would you do? Would you mention it to him and say you feel sorry about it? Would you offer support or advice? According to Ruth Clark, such 41 (treat) could mean well, but it might not be what he 42 (real) wants or needs.

Clark asked some college students to imagine some 43 (pleasant) situations, e.g., a low exam grade or the dad’s 44 (lose) of his job.The students were then 45 (ask) how they would like to be treated by a friend who learned of the bad situation from someone else. The results were a little 46 (surprise). Some said they would want and expect their friend to mention the 47 (annoy) situation, but most of the students in the study 48 (respond) that they would like the friend not to do it.The students made the 49 (decide) for themselves whether to discuss their problem with a friend. So, there is value in being a silent 50 (listen) around a troubled friend.

Directions: This part is to test your reading ability. There are 3 tasks for you to fulfill. You should read the materials carefully and do the tasks as you are instructed.

In order to learn a foreign language well, it is necessary to overcome the fear of making mistakes. If the primary goal of language use is communication, then mistakes are secondary considerations that may be dealt with gradually as awareness of those increases. On the other hand, students should not ignore their mistakes. The language learner may observe how native speakers express themselves, and how native expressions differ from the way the learner might say them. For example, a Spanish speaker who has been saying "I do it" to express willingness to do something in the immediate future, could, by interaction with naive speakers of English, Observe that native speakers actually say "I'll do it". The resulting discrepancy(差异) can serve as a basis for the student to modify his way of using the present tense in English. But a student who is unwilling to interact in the first place would lose this opportunity to learn by trial and error.

According to the passage, what is the present tense in English?

A.It is used with some verbs but not with others to express future intention.

B.It is not used to express a desire to do something in the immediate future.

C.It is basically the same in English as it is in Spanish.
