You've probably had the experience of having someone fall in love with you when you didn't
feel the same way. In such a case it's hard to know what to do. You don't want to be so obvious in your efforts that you make an enemy of him.

A friend of mine had this problem and handled it in the most tactful (得体的) way I've ever seen. Instead of telling her admirer directly, she devoted herself to introducing him to every girl she knew. Whenever she had a date with him, she arranged to drop in at the home of one of her girl friends. At last he clicked (一见如故) with one of these girls, and then everyone was happy. My friend was rid of a problem and she still had the young man as a friend, which was just what she wanted him to be.

Of course this solution may not work for you. You may have your own way of dealing with the problem. But whatever you decide to do, keep one thing in mind—the boy in question has feelings every bit as sensitive as your own. So try to find a way of discouraging him without hurting him.

The best title for this passage would be______.

A.How to Make a Friend

B.Problems of Dating

C.Good Advice for Girls

D.How to Free Yourself from an Admirer

Even the newest gardener realizes that plants die without water; what is not so well known
is that plants die equally decisively, though not so quickly, if they are overwatered. Beginners usually decide to play it safe and keep their potted plants thoroughly wet. In consequence, death by drowning is one of the commonest disasters to befall the plants of a new horticulturist. Plants wither away if they don't get enough water, and this draws attention to their problem. A plant that has been slightly underwatered so that it droops strikes terror into the heart of its new owner. But it will, in fact, recover completely as long as rescue comes in time and the process is not repeated too often. Overwatered plants, unfortunately, do not give any such obvious signal; slowly they cease to thrive and the first visible indication of serious trouble is a yellowing of the lower leaves. Unless the overwatered pot soil is given a considerable period without water, during which time the plant will continue to look wretched, it will suddenly collapse in exactly the same way as the underwatered plant but with no chance of being revived(复活)because the roots have rotted away.

From the text we can infer a horticulturist is person engaged in ______.

A.growing plants

B.raising birds

C.cutting plants

D.studying the death cause of plants

When we conduct foreign trade, the importance of understanding the language of a country c
annot be underestimated. The successful marketer must achieve export communication which requires a thorough understanding of the language as well as the ability to speak it. Those who deal with advertising should be concerned less with obvious differences between languages and more with the exact meanings expressed. A dictionary translation is not the same as an idiomatic interpretation, and seldom will the dictionary translation meet the needs. A national producer of soft drinks had the company's brand name impressed in Chinese characters which were phonetically (按照发地) accurate. It was discovered later, however, that the translation's literal meaning was "female horse fattened with wax," hardly the image the company sought to describe. So carelessly translated advertising statements not only lose their intended meaning but can suggest something very different including something offensive or ridiculous, Sometimes, what was translated was not an image the companies had in mind for their products. Many people believe that to fully appreciate the true meaning of a language it is necessary to live with the language for years. Whether or not this is the case, foreign marketers should never take it for granted that they are affectively communicating in another language.Which of the following is the best topic for the passage?A.Idiomatic Meanings of Languages.B.Language Problems in Foreign Trade.C.Translation Failures in Foreign Trade,D.Culture Difference between Languages.

Most dictionaries will tell you a number of【21】about a language. There are three things in
particular that【22】important. These three things are spelling, pronunciation, and meanings.

The first and most obvious thing is that a dictionary will【23】you the spelling of a word. If you' re not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical order--a, b, c, and so on .For example, on a dictionary page the word "poor" p, o, o, r--comes before "poverty"--p, o, v, e, r, t, y and the word "poverty" comes【24】the word "power'--p, o, w, e, r. The words are always given in alphabetical Order.

The second thing a dictionary will tell you is【25】. Most dictionaries give the pronunciation of a word in a special kind of alphabet. This special alphabet is called a phonetic, or sound alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell you generally【26】a word is pronounced. There are a few different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International Phonetic Alphabet to show pronunciation.

The【27】thing a dictionary will tell you is the meanings of words. You can【28】a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary will ex plain all of the word' s meanings. For example, in English the common word" get" has over 20 different meanings. The meaning, of course,【29】the sentence in which the word' is used.

These three things--spelling, pronunciation, and meanings--are some of the important【30】that you learn from dictionaries.

根据下列文章,回答26~30题。For the past several years, the Sunday newspaper supplement Parad
e has featured a column called “Ask Marilyn.” People are invited to query Marilyn vos Savant, who at age 10 had tested at a mental level of someone about 23 years old; that gave her an IQ of 228-the highest score ever recorded. IQ tests ask you to complete verbal and visual analogies, to envision paper after it has been folded and cut, and to deduce numerical sequences, among other similar tasks. So it is a bit confusing when vos Savant fields such queries from the average Joe (whose IQ is 100) as, What's the difference between love and fondness? Or what is the nature of luck and coincidence? It's not obvious how the capacity to visualize objects and to figure out numerical patterns suits one to answer questions that have eluded some of the best poets and philosophers.

Clearly, intelligence encompasses more than a score on a test. Just what does it means to be smart? How much of intelligence can be specified, and how much can we learn about it from neurology, genetics, computer science and other fields?

The defining term of intelligence in humans still seems to be the IQ score, even though IQ tests are not given as often as they used to be. The test comes primarily in two forms: the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale and the Wechsler Intelligence Scales (both come in adult and children's version)。 Generally costing several hundred dollars, they are usually given only by psychologists, although variations of them populate bookstores and the World Wide Web. Superhigh scores like vos Savant’s are no longer possible, because scoring is now based on a statistical population distribution among age pecks, rather tan simply dividing the mental are by the chronological age and multiplying by 100. Other standardized tests, such as the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), capture the main aspects of IQ tests.

Such standardized tests may not assess all the important elements necessary to succeed in school and in life, argues Robert J. Sternberg. In his article “How Intelligent Is Intelligence Testing?”。 Sternberg notes that traditional tests best assess analytical and verbal skills but fail to measure creativity and practical knowledge, components also critical to problem solving and life success. Moreover, IQ tests do not necessarily predict so well once populations or situations change. Research has found that IQ predicted leadership sills when the tests were given under low-stress conditions, but under high-stress conditions. IQ was negatively correlated with leadership-that is it predicted the opposite. Anyone who bas toiled through SAT will testify that test-taking skill also matters, whether it‘s knowing when to guess or what questions of skip.

第11题
Women earn less than men do. For example, in 1998 the hourly wages of women in the U. S. w
ere 26% less than those of men. The gap between male and female incomes becomes wider with age. The gap between the labor incomes of young women and young men varies. It's also clear that jobs in which women are concentrated pay less. The larger the number of workers who are women in an industry, the lower the average wages.

Why do women earn less than men do? Are the differences explained by the fact that women are looked down upon? If so, the government has to intervene (干预), to force the employers to pay equal wages to equal jobs. However, there is no agreement among economists about the causes of the gap. One view argues that women on the average have chosen low-paid jobs in which workers enjoy the freedom of entering and leaving the labor force, which reduces their years of experience relative to men. Other people say the gap can also be explained by the difference in educational background.

Much of the gap, however, has not been fully explained. It might be the result of some prejudice (偏见) against women. It is this part that has produced calls for government action. What would happen if the government did intervene to increase the wages paid to women? One possibility is that in comes for women as a group might actually decline (下降). An increase in wage decreases the quantity of labor imput demanded, resulting in decreased employment as the rate of hiring new workers declines The result will be a surplus (过剩) of labor. Those who can find jobs might be better off while those who had jobs might find themselves out of work.

The difference in labor incomes is most obvious between ______.

A.young men and young women

B.young women in the same industry

C.middle-aged men and middle-aged women

D.middle-aged women in the same industry
