Why are so many people unhappy in their jobs? Ther...

Why are so many people unhappy in their jobs? There are two primary reasons. First, some people are convinced that earning a living is wasting time? that they could spend enjoying themselves or uncovering their talents. If this is the case with your, recall you last long vacation. Was it two weeks of complete enjoyment? More likely it was a week and a half of fun in the sun, with another half of a week of bore. I can&39;t wait to get back to work. If you didn&39;t feel such vacation blues, then imagine taking a leave of absence. You could use it to work on a novel, enroll in classes or just sit around watching TV. At the end of three months, in all likelihood,yourself-esteem would be at an all-time low. While all work and no play is not good, all playand no work is disastrous. Wc need to feel we are accomplishing something. We also need some form. of order in our lives. The second and perhaps more prevalent reason for people not to like their work is that they feel trapped. Once you have been at a company for five years and have a spouse,a mortgage and a child, you often feel you have very little choice about jummping ship if things aren’t turning out as you’d planned. A steady paycheck can be the biggest manacle (束缚)of all. People resent having to do something because they have no other choices. If you find yourself resenting your job because you cant afford to quit, it mnay be timeco prepare what one career counselor humorously calls a cyanide(氰化物) capsule. He re-calls spy movies in/which the secret agent has. such a capsule hidden somewhere on His body. If he&39;s captured and tortured unbearably, he has an option. And having an option gives him the strength to hold on a little longer in tbe hope that the situation/ may change. Rather than cyanide. your option takes the form. of an up-to-date resume. You might also take a weekly glance through the help-wanted section, and make some visits to industry functions where low-key net-working can take place. You are not giving up on your current job. Rather , you are providing yourself with an option. If things get unbearable atwork, you could jump ship. Being in this position can do wonders for your attiude. It allows you to enjoy your work since, in reality, you are there only because you want to be. At the core of adopting a positive attitude to your workplace is above all assuming responsibility for your own situation. Most people feel controlled by their environment, but they really aren&39;t.

They have to learn to manage adaptation environment so they can get from it what they need. The second main reason for their unhappiness is that____.

A.they have been working in a company’for too long

B.they are not permitted to change a job

C.they have no other way out than keep working

D.they have to work on to pay off their debts

The example about your last vacation proves that"A.all play and no work is disastrous

B.all work and no play is not good

C.avacation of two weeks is not enough

D.a vacation of two weeks is more than enough

With an up-to-date resume ready as an option, you may feel better at your job Because___.A.you are to do wonders in your work

B.it is up to you to choose between two alternatives

C.you have made a decision on your own

D.it seems to be the only positive attitude

Research by Deborah Tannen provides us with some important insights into the differences b
etween men and women in terms of their conversational styles. In particular, she has been able to explain why gender often creates oral communication barriers. The essence of Tannen’s research is that men use talk to emphasize status whereas women use it to create connection Tannen states that communication is a continual balancing act, juggling the conflicting needs for intimacy and independence. Intimacy emphasizes closeness and commonalities. Independence emphasizes separateness and differences. So, for many men, conversations are primarily a means to preserve independence and maintain status in a hierarchical social order. For many women, conversations are negotiations for closeness in which people try to seek and give confirmation and support.

Most shoplifters agree that the January sales offer wonderful opportunities for the h
ard-working thief. With the shops so crowded and the staff so busy, it does not require an extraordinary talent to help yourself to one or two little things and escape unnoticed. It is known, in the business, as hoisting.

But the hoisting game is not what it used to be. Even at the height of the sales, shoplifters today never know if they are being watched by one of those evil little balls that hang from the ceilings of so many department stores above the most desirable goods.

As if that was not trouble enough for them, they can now be filmed at work and obliged to attend a showing of their performance in court.

Selfridges was the first big London store to install close-circuit videotape equipment to watch its sales floors. In October last year the store won its first court case for shoplifting using as evidence a videotape clearly showing a couple stealing dresses. It was an important test case which encouraged other stores to install similar equipment.

When the balls, called sputniks, first made an appearance in shops it was widely believed that their only function was to frighten shoplifters. Their strange appearance, the curious holes and red lights on and off, certainly made the theory believable.

It did not take long, however, for serious shoplifters to start showing suitable respect. Soon after the equipment was in operation at Selfridges, store detective Brian Chadwick was sitting in the control room watching a woman secretly putting bottles of perfume into her bag.

As she turned to go, Chadwick recalled, she suddenly looked up at the sputnik and stopped. She could not possibly have seen that the camera was trained on her because it is completely hidden but she must have had a feeling that I was looking at her. For a moment she paused, then she returned to the counter and started putting everything back. When she had finished, she opened her bag towards the camera to show it was empty and hurried out of the store.

(1)Why is January a good month for shoplifters?

A、To show she was sorry for what she had done.

B、Because she was afraid of being arrested.

(5)The author believes that __________________.

A、shoplifters respect sputniks now

As you are students of English, it's very possible that you'll be interested in England. T
hat's where the language was first spoken. But England is often called by other names. This often confuses people and I wonder if you know what these names mean. So, now I would like to tell you about this matter of names. I believe that you have heard people use the names England, Britain of Great Britain. Let's see what each of these names means.

If you look at a map of Europe, you'll see a group of islands--one larger island off the northwest coats, one smaller and many tiny ones. These make up what is called the British Isles (不列填群岛). The largest island of the British Isles in Britain. It is also called Great Britain. The smaller island is Ireland (爱尔兰)。

Britain is divided into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England. But sometimes the word " England" is used instead of "Britain". Why so?

In anceient times, what is Britain now used to be three different countries. People in these different counntries spoke different languages. Over many years the three countries became one. England in the largest and richest of the three and it has the most people. So the English people take it for granted that their own name stands for the whole island.

There's another thing that confuses people; sometimes you may hear people say "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. "That is the official name of the country. Northern Irelnd is only one sixth of the island of Ireland. The rest of the island is an independent state, called the Republic of Ireland. So we have the names of "England", "Britain"," Great Britain", and "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Now do you know what each of them means?

English was first spoken in ______.

A.Britain

B.England

C.Great Britain

D.Ireland

To get a chocolate out of a box demands a considerable amount of unpacking: the box has to
be taken out of its paper bag; the plastic wrapper has to be torn off, the lid opened and the packing paper inside removed; the chocolate itself then has to be unwrapped from its own piece of paper. Similarly a pot of face cream comes surrounded by layers of paper, waged inside a cardboard box, and the whole thing wrapped tightly in plastic.

It is not only luxuries which are wrapped in this way, With so many goods now produced centrally and sold in supermarkets it is becoming increasingly difficult to buy anything from nails to potatoes that is not already done up in plastic or paper.

The wrapper itself is of no interest to the shopper, who usually throws it away immediately. Useless wrapping accounts for much o the 31 pounds in weight of rubbish put out by the average London household each week. So why is it done? Some of it, like the wrapping on meat, is necessary, but most of the rest is simply competitive selling. This is stupid. Packaging is using up scarce energy and raw materials and ruining all the time. One big firm reports that its glass, cans and paper have all gone up by 30 per cent in the last couple of months, while plastic has increased by 50 percent and all these prices are still rising. This seems as yet to have had surprisingly little effect on the packaging practice of manufacturers.

Little research is being carried out on the costs in energy and materials of other possible types of packaging. Just how practical is it, for instance, for local authorities to save waste paper and re-manufacture it as egg-boxes? Would it be cheaper to plant another forest to produce new paper?

One reason for the unorganized behavior. of everyone concerned is probably the varied nature of the packaging industry. So many people, with so many different interests of their own, are affected that it is extremely hard to reach any agreement on what should be done. Also, packagers say that preserving forests and preventing waste is not their concerns.

The shopper gets rid of the wrapper immediately because______.

A.he is careless.

B.it adds to the weight.

C.it is difficult for him to handle.

D.it has no importance for him.
