听力原文: Some banks offer other types of loans repayable by monthly installments, such as business development loans, house improvement loans, and farm development loans. These may be either secured or unsecured. Secured loans attract a slightly lower rate of interest than unsecured loans. Some banks offer revolving credit schemes. These normally involve loans repayable by regular monthly installments, but they differ from other loans repayable by installments in two respects. First, the borrower need not take up the full amount of the loan at the outset. Secondly, as his repayments reduce his indebtedness, he can "top up" his loan by borrowing more, provided that the total debt outstanding does not exceed his agreed credit limit. In 1967 some banks introduced a new form. of account called a "budget account". The object is to allow personal customers to spread the incidence of normal personal and household expenditure.

24. Which of the following loans is not repaid by installments?

25.Which of the following loans would attract a lower rate of interest?

26.How does a borrower "top up" his loan?

27.What is the objective of introduction of the budget account?

(24)

A.Business development loans.

B.House improvement loans.

C.Farm development loans.

D.Overdrafts.

In what now seems like the prehistoric times of computer history, the early post-war e
ra (战后时期) there was a quite widespread concern that computers would take over the world from man one day. Already today, less than forty years later, as computers are relieving us of more and more of the routine tasks in business and in our personal lives, we are facing with a less dramatic but also less foreseen problem. People tend to be over-trusting(过分信任) of computers and are reluctant to challenge their authority. Indeed, they behave as if they were hardly aware that wrong buttons may be pushed, or that a computer may simply malfunction(失灵 ).

(78)Obviously, there would be no point in investing(投入) in a computer if you had to check all its answers, but people should also rely on their own internal computers and check the machine when they have the feeling that something has gone wrong. Questioning and routine double checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre-computer days. Maybe each computer should come with the following warning: for all the help this computer may provide, it should not be seen as a substitute for fundamental thinking and reasoning skills.

While privacy campaigners protest, users generally vote with their clicks and carry on regardless. So should we conclude the Interuet generation is happy to trade its privacy for free or cheaper Web services? Not according to Nicola Jentzsch of the German Institute of Research in Berlin, and colleagues, who last week published research showing that most people prefer to protect their personal data when given a choice and that a significant proportion are willing to pay extra to do so. The researchers directed 443 students to a website offering tickets for a real movie showing, sold by two different uendors (商贩). Although the tickets were subsidized, the volunteers, who were able to purchase one, two, or no tickets, had to pay most of the cost themselves. When both vendors offered tickeks at the same price but only one required customers to enter their cell phone number, the more privacy-friendly yendor got 83% of sales. When participants were offered the santo choice, but with an additional charge of 50 euro cents from the privacy-friendly cinema, its market share fell to 31%. "It turns out that when you are good on privacy you can charge more and make a greater profit," says Alessandro Acquisti of the University of Cambridge, one of the authors of the study, published by the European Network and Information Security Agency. "What people say in surveys is that they care about privacy, but what they actually do is spend their time constantly updating their status on Facebo0k," says Acquisti. "This has led some to conclude that people no longer care about privacy. This new data, along with similar work we have done in the U. Distance learning has moved far away from the traditional correspondence course, aimed at
the individual student working alone. The global reach of the Internet makes it possible to unite geographically scattered students in a virtual classroom. Methods such as multimedia, video-conferencing and the Internet will increasingly allow students both to proceed at their own pace, and to interact with one another and their teachers.

Even without taking the technology to its limits, the idea of education as a lifelong process is catching on throughout the industrialized world. Already, working adults who pursue their studies part-time make up roughly half of students taking college courses in the United States.

However, there is debate in scholar circles about how far new technology should be used for teaching academic subjects in which personal contacts between teacher and student are still vital. Britain's Open University, for example, a world leader in distance education, has embraced information technology cautiously, believing it to be no substitute for books and the exchange of ideas at live tutorials and summer schools.

But the Open University is also moving with the tide. It has set up a "knowledge media institute" to explore ways of adopting information technology. Some teachers are concerned about this trend, arguing that the heavy investment that students are expected to make in computer and communications equipment contradicts the concept of "open" cost, of course, is and important factor in many developing countries, where few people have computers or even phones. Rather than uniting the world, the new technologies could lead to societies of information haves and have-nots.

Distance learning is different from the traditional correspondence course in that______.

A.it requires the individual student to work alone

B.it enables all the students to work at the same pace

C.it allows students to discuss with one another and their teachers

D.it enables geographically scattered students to study in the same physical classroom

Bill Gates, the head of the world’s biggest computer software company, the Microsoft C
orporation, has a mission: “to put a computer on every office desk and in every home”. Bill Gates has had this mission since he was a university student years ago. This deep personal interest, together with his technical skills and his business marketing skills helped him to create a giant computer company and to make him wealthy.

Although he is so wealthy, Bill Gates does not want to give up. He is still very interested in his vision and he travels the globe, making quick stops in cities to sell the new software products of his company.

The central vision of Bill Gates is the “information highway”. This is a network for computers that will link every home, office and shop in the future. This computer network system will have an effect on business, shopping and education. Bill Gates says that the main use of this new technology will be in communication. It will be a way to find people with common interests and to share opinions with them.

But is this communication by computer along the “information highway” really a good thing? Won’t we be sitting at home, only “socializing” with our computer, paying big companies money so that we can receive information that some large communication corporation somewhere had decided is “acceptable” for us to read? No, says Bill Gates, he thinks that the phrase “information highway” is a terrible phrase. It makes people think that we are all going down the same road, he says. In fact, the computer network will let us choose our own intellectual direction. It will give us freedom. It will also bring good to society, because it will allow for the spread of education. When more and more people receive education, the gap between the rich and the poor will narrow.

In the meantime, however, the gap between the rich and the poor is still there. To be added to this now is the gap between those with computers and those without.
