听力原文: A certificate of deposit (CD) is a time deposit with a bank. Time deposits may not be withdrawn on demand like a check account. CDs are generally issued by commercial banks but they can be bought through brokerages. They bear a specific maturity date that usually lasts from 3 months to 5 years, a specified interest rate, and can be issued in any denomination, very similar to bonds. CDs offer a slightly higher yield than T-Bills because of the slightly higher default risk for a bank, but overall the likeliness of a large bank going broke is pretty slim. Of course, the amount of interest you earn depends on a number of factors such as the current interest rate environment, how much money you invest, the length of time, and your specific bank.
24. What is a CD?
25.Which of the followings generally issue CDs?
26.How long does a specific maturity usually last?
27.Why do CDs pay higher return to investors than T-bills?
(24)
A.A term deposit that can be drawn at any time.
B.A time deposit with a bank.
C.A current deposit.
D.A cheek account.
Memory is said to be stored in the brain as a "memory trace (记忆痕) ". What makes up this trace is not known. Some scientists believe that certain chemical substances may carry certain memories. For example, one substance, when given to rats, causes them to fear the dark.
Other research into memory has to do with how the brain works. Psychologists use three means to find out bow a person remembers. For example, give a person a grocery list. Let the person memorize the list, then put it away. The most natural way to find out how much a person remembers of the grocery list is to ask what he or she remembers. This is called the method of recall. Another method is called recognition. Give the person another grocery list. Ask him or her to choose items on the first list from the items that are on only the second list. Often a person will be able to recognize things that he or she cannot recall. A third method of finding how much a person remembers is called relearning. Here the person is asked to read over the first list. The person will probably learn the list the second time faster than he did the first time. The difference in the time it takes to relearn the list is thought of as measure of how much a person has remembered.
One way of remembering something is to repeat it many times. Interest is very important. Boring lists of facts are much more difficult to remember than something that we understand and are interested in. Motivation, or wanting to do something, is also important. Motivation is linked with reward. For example, a hungry animal quickly learns how to do something if that action gets the animal food. In humans, wanting to learn is often motivation. The praise of a teacher or the knowledge that an answer is correct is rewarding.
We can learn from the 2nd paragraph that ______.
A.bad memories may cause rats to fear the dark
B.it is hard to tell what a memory trace consists of
C.chemical substances carry certain memories
D.memory is stored in the brain as a substance
(79)When students first go to a library, they may be at a loss as to what to read of all the different subjects. Well, Bacon tells you to "look at weak places in your armor(盔甲)", and shows you how to fill up the blanks in your knowledge. On the other hand, it is no good just trying to fill your mind with knowledge. Knowledge in itself is often useless. A mind filled with too much knowledge is like a room too full of furniture; a man cannot walk about freely in it, and look out the windows. It is much better to concentrate on a few subjects which interest you and to deal lightly with the others than to march heavily through the whole range(范围) of learning, like a silly tourist going through a museum and not missing a single object. (80) If you try to master every subject, you may become very wise, but you will be very lonely and you will probably lose all your friends. So you must learn to pick and choose, and you must also learn to look here and there in a library like a camel eating grass on the grassland. If you watch it eating, you will see that although he is supposed to be one of the most stupid animals in the world, he has at least one of the qualities(品质) of the cultured(有修养的) man, the power to pick and choose. A student looking for mental food in a library should take the camel as his model.
The writer thinks that one must ______
A.read as many books as he can
B.try to read books on all the different subjects
C.only read books on subjects that interest him
D.read and absorb a lot
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: "This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and your writing is illegible (难以辨认的) ." It may have a sharp criticism of the pupil's technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child's deep feelings. The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the errors, but if his priorities had centered on the child's ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation to seek improvement.
Teachers differ in their opinions about ______.
A.the difficulties in teaching spelling
B.the role of spelling in general language development
C.the complexities of the basic writing skills
D.the necessity of teaching spelling
听力原文: A house is the most expensive thing most people will ever buy. Very few people have enough money of their own to buy a home, so they have to borrow money from a bank. Borrowing money from a bank to buy a house is called taking a mortgage. The hank usually lends money or gives a mortgage for 25 years. This means that the person who borrows has 25 years to pay back the money. The bank lends this money with interest, and the borrower makes equal monthly payments to the hank until he has paid the mortgage. Houses are so expensive that many people nowadays have to borrow as much as $50,000. In other words, they will have a $50,000 mortgage.
How can you get a mortgage? When you find a house you like, you go to a bank, sometimes it is necessary to go to a few banks, before applying for a mortgage at once. The bank will investigate your financial history and decide if they think you axe a good risk. They will want to know what kind of job you have. In addition, the banks will require a down payment. Depending on which state you live in, the bank may require as much as 30% of the price of the house as a down payment. The bank will then lend you the rest of the money to buy the house. Many people are never able to buy a house because they cannot save enough money for the down payment.

B.It means to buy an old house at a low price.
C.It means to borrow money from a bank to buy a house.
D.It means to borrow money from a friend to buy a house.

Oil prices have raised overall consumer prices and cut into household purchasing power. So far the higher costs haven't deterred(阻止) buying, even buying of cars and other energy-sensitive items. The major reason for the lack of reaction is that oil is less important to the economy than it once was. Oil, which produced 45% of world energy in 1971, accounted for only 35% in 2003, with increases in nuclear and natural gas use making up the difference.
GM, Ford, and Chrysler suffered as buyers shifted to more fuel-efficient vehicles from Toyota and Honda, but the shift was hot pronounced. Admittedly, light truck sales are holding up in part because manufacturers are offering large discounts to "move the metal", but the fact that buyers are responding to those incentives shows they aren't too scared of gas prices.
Americans continue to spend more than they earn, but gasoline prices will have an effect. Although the April chain store results suggest gasoline prices aren't hurting much yet, eventually Americans will be forced to realize that they have to slow down. We expect the economy to slow in the second half of the year as the impact of higher oil prices sinks in. How much the economy slows will depend on how high oil prices remain. We expect some drop in oil prices by yearend, but I have been saying that for so long even I am starting not to believe it.
The anger against the oil companies is clearly misplaced. Exxon and friends control only a small share of world oil reserves. Most are now in the hands of state-owned oil companies. The recent move by Bolivia to nationalize its industry is only the latest in a long line of similar actions. The history of these enterprises is one of severe underinvestment and mismanagement, which tends to reduce supply and keep prices high. The risk on oil prices is primarily on the high side of our forecast.
Although I think oil prices will drop back in the medium term, to address my serious worries, I'm buying my wife a bike for Mothers' Day.
The economy at the beginning of 2006 is not affected by the high oil price mainly because ______.
A.the warm winter requires less oil to run the heaters
B.the warm winter promotes consumption, across the country
C.people believe that the oil price will drop in near future
D.people don't think the high price will make much of a difference
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child—things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong.
When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that______.
A.life for a child is comparatively easy
B.a child is always loved whatever he does
C.if much is given to a child, he must do something in return
D.only children are interested in life
