Researchers from Yale and the University of Connecticut followed 600 middle-schoolstudents as they developed from fifth to seventh grade, nothing their weight and if they had zerobreakfast, breakfast either at home or at school, or breakfast in both places. They found thatweight gain among second-breakfast eaters was no different from the average gain seen amongall students. Children who didn ’t eat breakfast, or ate it only sometimes, were more likely to beoverweight than double-breakfasters. It should be noted that only about one in ten children inthe study ate two breakfasts.
The study wasn’t designed to figure out why this might be true, but the researchers havesome theories: that people who don ’t eat breakfast (or any meal) might overeat later in the day,and that as people become obese, they tend to reduce calories (热量) by having no breakfast.
Yes, school breakfasts are more like a healthy snack(零食) than a full meal, and growingteens can eat a large amount of food. But if you ’re still not eating breakfast because you think itgives you more colories, you are not only mistaken, but you are also missing out one of life ’s greatpleasures.

Generations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is one life’s essentials. Eating
breakfast at the start of the day, we have all been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the
family car before starting a trip.
But for many people the thought of food first thing in the morning is by no means a pleasure. So despite all the
efforts, they still take no breakfast. Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures are available, the
number of people who didn’t have breakfast, increased by 33 percent.
For those who feel pain of guilt about not eating breakfast, however, there is some good news. Several studies
in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast.
“Going without breakfast does not affect performance,” said Arrold E. Bender, former professor of the nutrition
at Queen Elizabeth College in London, “nor does giving people breakfast improve performance.”
Scientific evidence linking breakfast to better health or better performance is surprisingly inadequate, and most
of the recent work involves children, not adults, “The literature”, says one researcher, Dr. Erresto at the University
of Texas, “is poor”.
The latest year for which figures could be obtained is _______.
A. the year the author wrote the article
B. 1977
C. any year between 1997 and 1983
D. 1983
What is implied but NOT stated by the author is that _______. A. breakfast does not affect performance B. Dr. Erresto is engaged in research work at an institution of higher learning C. not eating breakfast might affect the health of children D. Professor Bender once taught college courses in nutrition in London

Grains 4U Co (Grains) manufactures breakfast cereals and has three factories, four warehouses and three distribution depots spread across North America. The audit for the year ended 31 December 2015 is almost complete and the financial statements and audit report are due to be signed shortly. Profit before taxation is $7·9 million. The following events have occurred subsequent to the year end and no amendments or disclosures have been made in the financial statements.
Event 1 – Fire
On 15 February 2016, a fire occurred at the largest of the distribution depots. The fire resulted in extensive damage to 40% of the company’s vehicles used for dispatching goods to customers; however, there have been no significant delays to customer deliveries. The company estimates the level of damage to the vehicles to be in excess of $650,000. Only a minimal level of inventory, approximately $25,000, was damaged. Grain’s insurance company has started to investigate the fire to assess the likelihood and level of payment, however, there are concerns the fire was started deliberately, and if true, would invalidate any insurance cover.
Event 2 – Inventory
On 18 February 2016, it was discovered that a large batch of Grain’s new cereal brand ‘Loopy Green Loops’ held in inventory at the year end was defective, as the cereal contained too much green food colouring. To date no sales of this new cereal have been made. The cost of the defective batch of inventory is $915,000 and the defects cannot be corrected. However, the scrapped cereal can be utilised as a raw material for an alternative cereal brand at a value of $50,000.
Required:
For each of the two subsequent events described above:
(i) Based on the information provided, explain whether the financial statements require amendment; and
(ii) Describe audit procedures which should now be performed in order to form. a conclusion on any required amendment.
Note: The total marks will be split equally between each event.
