根据以下内容回答题:

Let US take a look at the chief thing in the story—the human body itself.A human body appears to be rather soft and delicate, compared with that of a wild animal, but it is actually surprisingly strong.Indeed, its very softness and looseness are an advantage;it makes man good at moving about and falling about in safety.Man is the most skillful in movement of all living things of his own size, because he can do so many different things with his limbs.Man’s games show how he can control his own body.No other land creature can swim as skillfully as man;none has such varied grace;very few live as long as he;none is so strong in its natural resistance to disease. Therefore man has a great advantage in his battle against the risks of damage and death that threaten him.It is difficult to kill him as long as he is fed and in good health.Yet every day thousands of people die needlessly, even though man is naturally strong, because of those two killers, disease and starvation, with the battle.

Old age?No one can live forever,so one might’suppose that quite a large number of oldpeople would come to the end of their days every year. There is,however, another thing to re-member.During the time it has taken you to read this page,a considerable number of babies have been born somewhere in the wodd—one is born every one and a quarter seconds!Of these babies, one group can be expected to have a good long life of about seventy years, because they were lucky enough to be born in countries where living standards are high.

The deadliest of all killers are starvation and disease. We cannot be content until we have mastered them.To do so is one of the most important tasks of our times.

The softness and looseness of man’s body are an advantage because it__________ . 查看材料

Alice Walker makes her living by writing, and her poems, short stories, and novels have wo
n many awards and fellowships for her. She was born in Eatonton, Georgia. She went to public school there, and then to Spelman College in Atlanta before coming to New York to attend Sarah Lawrence College, from which she graduated in 1966. For a time she lived in Jackson, Mississippi, with her lawyer husband and her small daughter. About Langston Hughes, American poet, in her first book for children, she says, "After my first meeting with Langston Hughes I promised I would write a book about him for children someday. Why? Because I, at 22, knew next to nothing of his work, and he didn't scold me; he just gave me a pile of his books. And he was kind to me; I will always be grateful that in his absolute warmth and generosity he fulfilled my deepest dream of what a poet should be. "

"To me he is not dead at all. Hardly a day goes by that I don't think of him or speak of him. Once, just before he died, when he was sick with the flu, I took him a sack full of oranges. The joy I felt in giving that simple gift is never decreased by time. He said he like oranges, too."

A.Alice Walker's reflections on Langston Hughes

B.The influence of Alice Walker on the writing of Langston Hughes

C.Langston Hughes book about Alice Walker

Hemingway was born in Illinois, his family took him as a boy on frequent hunting and fishi
ng trips and so acquainted him early with the kinds of virtues (美德) such as courage and endurance, which were later reflected in his fiction (文学作品) . After high school, he worked as a newspaper reporter and then went oversea to take part in World War I. After the war he lived for several years in Paris, where he became part of a group of Americans who felt strange from their country. They considered themselves a lost generation. It was not long before he began to publish the powerful novel "The Sun Also Rises". His subjects were often war and its effects on people, or contests, such as hunting or bullfighting, which demand stamina and courage.

Hemingway's style. of writing is striking. His sentences are short, his words simple, yet they are often filled with emotion. A careful reading can show us, furthermore, that he is a master of the pause. That is, if we look closely, we see how the action of his stories continues during the silences, during the times his characters say nothing. This action is often full of meaning. There are times when the most powerful effect comes from restraint (适度). Such times occur often in Hemingway's fiction. He perfected the art of expressing emotion with few words.

The word "stamina" in the last line of paragraph 1 can most probably be replaced by______.

A.money

B.time

C.energy

D.weapon

There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort
of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual the sort of environment in which he is reared (抚养). If an individual is handicapped environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.

The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster (收养) homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark's IQ was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.

This selection can be titled ______.

A.Measuring Your Intelligence

B.Intelligence and Environment

C.The Case of Peter and Mark

D.how the Brain Influences Intelligence

Archimedes was a famous Greek mathematician and scientist. He was born around 287 BC and h
e died in the year 212 BC.

Archimedes is most well-known for one specific idea that he came up with. "Archimede's Principle" states that a solid object which is immersed in a liquid is pushed up by a force which is equal to the weight of the water that the object moves. For example, if you put a piece of wood and a piece of gold the same size in water, only the wood will float. Both the wood and gold move the same amount of water, but the wood weighs less than this water, while the gold weighs more.

It is believed that Archimedes discovered this principle when the king of Syracuse asked him to solve a problem. The king wanted to know if his crown was pure gold or a mixture of gold and silver. The king, of course, did not melt his crown to find out. The idea came to Archimedes as he lowered himself into his bath. He noticed how the water spilled out of the tub. He decided to use the same idea for the crown. He knew that a gold crown immersed in water would weigh more than one made of silver. The experiment was done and the goldsmith was proved guilty of trying to cheat the king.

A good title for the selection is ______.

A.Archimedes

B.Archimedes' Principle

C.A gold and silver crown

D.The king of Syracuse
