Who talks more, women or men? The seemingly conflicting evidence is resolved

by the difference between what I call public and private speaking.More men feel comfortable doing "public speaking," while more women feel comfortable doing "private" speaking.Another way of capturing these differences is by using the terms report-talk and rapport-talk.For most women, the language of conversation is primarily a language of rapport: a way of establishing connections and negotiating relationships. Emphasis is placed on displaying similarities and matching experiences. From childhood, girls criticize their friends who try to stand out or appear better than others. People feel their closest connections at home, or in places where they feel at home -- with one or a few people they feel close to and comfortable with -- in other words, during private speaking. But even the most public situations can be approached like private speaking.

For most women, talk is primarily a means to preserve independence and negotiate and maintain status in a hierarchical(等级制度的) social order. This is done by exhibiting knowledge and skill, and by ho1ding center stage through verbal performance such as torytelling, joking,or conveying information. From childhood, men learn to use talking as a way to get and keep attention. Therefore, they are more comfortable speaking in 1arger groups made up of people they know 1ess well,in the broadest sense,"public speaking”. But even the most private situations can be approached like public speaking, more like giving a report than establishing rapport.

The number of people in the U.S.who choose not to marry is growing every year.By 1996 about 25 million people over the age of 21 years were living alone.50 years ago this number was less than 2 million. One reason for this is because people are getting married at a much later age than in the past. The average age for men is now 27 years. For women it is about 25 years.Another reason is the increase in the number of divorces.

Living alone has become more acceptable in American society. In the past people sometimes think those who lived alone were a little strange. These days, however, several of the most popular TV shows tell the story of men and women who can't meet "the right person" and who plan to be single forever. Many such single people (especially women) feel that they are more free to pursue (追求) their careers (事业) than those who are married. In a way these people are married to their jobs.

Equal pay for equal work is a phrase used by the American women who feel that they are loo
ked down upon by society. They say it is not right for women to be paid less than men for the same work.

People who hold the opposite opinion(mainly men)have an answer to this. They say that men have more responsibility than women; a married man is expected to earn money to support his family and to make the important decision, and therefore it is right for men to be paid more. There are some people who hold even stronger opinion than this and are against married women working at all. When wives go out to work, they say, the home and children are given no attention to. If women are encouraged by equal pay to take full time job, they will be unable to do the things. Women are best at making a comfortable home and bringing up children. They will have to give up their present position in society.

This is exactly what they want to give up, the women who disagree say. They want to escape from the limited place which society expects them to fill, and to have freedom to choose between a job and home life, or mixture of the two. Women have the right of equal pay and equal opportunities.

These women have expressed their opinions forcefully by using the famous saying, "All men are created equal. " They point out that the meaning of this sentence is "all human beings are created equal."

The women use the phrase "equal pay for equal work" to demand that ______.

A.women's work shouldn't be harder than men's

B.men should be paid less than women

C.people doing harder work should earn more

D.men and women should be paid the same amount of money for the same work

It seems that beauty and women are twins. Observe for yourself. Ads on fashion flood TV sc
reen, radio programs, magazines and the streets. Whether they have realized or not, women are besieged (包围) by a sea of fashion. They are taught to think that without beautiful clothes they will grow old and lose their charm. So who dares to neglect dressing up at the cost of their appearance and youth?

But I do not agree with the opinion that women have to show their beauty through their looks. The richness of their mind proves to be more beautiful and attractive than their looks. A woman who has experienced many troubles and may be called "aunt" or "granny" can still maintain her beauty if she has such excellent qualities as knowledge, ability, a kind heart and concern for others.

In addition, old and young, beautiful and ugly are relative concepts. People who keep a young mind will never feel old. Curious about new things and eager to learn more, they keep up with the tide. Plainly dressed women may have a type of beauty, which is pure and real.

Reading and learning is the best way to keep one youthful. Good books are fertile soil which can feed the flower of one's heart and looks.

Why does the author say that beauty and women are twins?

A.Women are born to be beauties.

B.Women like to show off their beauties

C.Women are proud of their beauty

D.Women try to maintain their beauty by dressing up

A new study suggests that contrary to most surveys. People art actually more stressed at h
ome than at work. Researchers measured people’s cortntlol. Which is it at stress marker. While they were at work and while they were at home and found it higher at what is supposed to be a place of refuge.

“Further contradicting conventional wisdom, we found that women as well as men have lower levels of stress at work than at home,” writes one of the researchers. Sarah Damaske, In fact women say they feel better at work. She notes. “it is men not women. Who report being bappicr at home than at work,” Another surprise is that the findings hold true for both those with childrcn and without, but more so for nonparents. This is why pcoplc who work outside the home have better health.

What the study doesn’t measure is whether people are still doing work when they’ re at home, whether it is household work or work brought home from the office. For many men, the end of the workday is a time to kick back. For women who stay home, they never get to leave the office. And for women who work outside the home, they often are playing catch-up-with-household tasks. With the blurring of roles, and the fact that the home front lags well behind the workplace in making adjustments for working women, it’ s not surprising that women are more stressed at home.

But it’s not just a gender thing. At work, people pretty much know what they’re supposed to be doing: working, making money, doing the tasks they have to do in order to draw an income. The bargain is very pure: Employee puts in hours of physical or mental labor and employee draws out life-sustaining moola.

On the home front, however, people have no such clarity. Rare is the household in which the division of labor is so clinically and methodically laid out. There are a lot of tasks to be done, there are inadequate rewards for most of them. Your home colleagues-your family-have no clear rewards for their labor; they need to be talked into it, or if they’ re teenagers, threatened with complete removal of all electronic devices. Plus, they’ re your family. You cannot fire your family. You never really get to go home from home.

So it’s not surprising that people are more stressed at home. Not only are the tasks apparently infinite, the co-workers are much harder to motivate.

According to Paragraph 1,most previous surveys found that home______ .

A.was an un realistic place for relaxation

B.generated more stress than the workplace

C.was an ideal place for stress measurement

D.offered greater relaxation than the workplace

According to Damaske, who are likely to be the happiest at home?A.Working mothers

B.division of labor at home is seldom clear-cut

C.household tasks are generally more motivating

D.family labor is often adequately rewarded

The word“moola”(Line 4,Para 4)most probably means______ .A.energy

Every nation has a set of rules either written or unwritten, which determines how people a
ct with each other. Formal written rules are often laws and they control how we drive operate a business, or run a government. Individuals who disobey laws may be fined or put in jail. Because illegal behavior. generally harms other individuals or societies at large. Our court system must punish people who don't obey these formal rules.

Informal rules, often called "manners", describe correct and incorrect behavior. in such situations as eating in a restaurant, going on a date, or working in an office. If one is impolite or misbehaves in these situations, other people often consider offender insensitive. And although we can strongly disagree to such misconduct, we can no legally punish someone for simply being inconsiderate or unpleasant.

Neither laws nor manners are inflexible; both changes as society develops. For example, in the early twentieth century, the selling of strong spirits was forbidden. This law, however, had to be changed because the government found it impossible to force people to drink only soft drinks. More recently, many people who were dissatisfied with the unequals between the rights of men and women worked to pass the equal rights law, as women became more independent and took on new roles, a new law was considered necessary to reflect that change.

According to the passage, people who offended the law may be ______.

A.put to death

B.put on afire

C.doing fine

D.put into prison

Historians of women’s labor in the United States at first

largely disregarded the story of female service workers

-women earning wages in occupations such as salesclerk.

domestic servant, and office secretary. These historians

(5) focused instead on factory work, primarily because it

seemed so different from traditional, unpaid “women’s

work” in the home, and because the underlying economic

forces of industrialism were presumed to be gender-blind

and hence emancipatory in effect. Unfortunately, emanci-

(10) pation has been less profound than expected, for not even

industrial wage labor has escaped continued sex segre-

gation in the workplace.

To explain this unfinished revolution in the status of

women, historians have recently begun to emphasize the

(15) way a prevailing definition of femininity often etermines

the kinds of work allocated to women, even when such

allocation is inappropriate to new conditions. For instance,

early textile-mill entrepreneurs, in justifying women’s

employment in wage labor, made much of the assumption

(20) that women were by nature skillful at detailed tasks and

patient in carrying out repetitive chores; the mill owners

thus imported into the new industrial order hoary stereo-

types associated with the homemaking activities they

presumed to have been the purview of women. Because

(25)women accepted the more unattractive new industrial tasks

more readily than did men, such jobs came to be regarded

as female jobs. And employers, who assumed that women’s

“real” aspirations were for marriage and family life.

declined to pay women wages commensurate with those of

(30) men. Thus many lower-skilled, lower-paid, less secure jobs

came to be perceived as “female.”

More remarkable than the origin has been the persistence

of such sex segregation in twentieth-century industry. Once

an occupation came to be perceived as “female.” employers

(35) showed surprisingly little interest in changing that percep-

-tion, even when higher profits beckoned. And despite the

urgent need of the United States during the Second World War

to mobilize its human resources fully, job segregation by sex

characterized even the most important

(40) war industries. Moreover, once the war ended, employers

quickly returned to men most of the “male” jobs that

women had been permitted to master.

According to the passage, job segregation by sex in the United States was______

A.greatly diminlated by labor mobilization during the Second World War

B.perpetuated by those textile-mill owners who argued in favor of women’s employment in wage labor

C.one means by which women achieved greater job security

D.reluctantly challenged by employers except when the economic advantages were obvious

E.a constant source of labor unrest in the young textile industry
