Animals react to the changing seasons with changes in mood and behavior. and human beings are no exception. Most people find they eat and sleep slightly more in winter and dislike the dark mornings and short days. For some, however, symptoms (症状) are severe enough to damage their lives and to cause considerable stress. These people are suffering from SAD. The symptoms tend to start from around September each year lasting until April, but are at their worst in the darkest months.

The standard figure says that around 2% of people in Northern Europe suffer badly, with many more (10%) putting up with milder symptoms. Across the world the incidence (发生率) increases with distance from the equator (赤道), except where there is snow on the ground, when it becomes less common. More women than men are found having SAD. Children and young people can also suffer from it.

The problem stems from the lack of bright light in winter. Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, although the exact means by which sufferers are affected is not yet known.

As the cause is lack of bright light, the treatment is to be in bright light every day by using a lightbox or a similar bright light treatment. (Going to a brightly-lit climate, whether skiing or somewhere hot, is indeed a cure. ) The preferred level of light is about as bright as a spring morning on a clear day and for most people sitting in front of a lightbox, allowing the light to reach the eyes, for between 15 and 45 minutes daily will be sufficient to alleviate the symptoms. The user does not have to stare at the light, but can watch TV or read a book, just allowing the light to reach the eyes. The connection is complex. In fact，very rich people rate substantially higher in satisfaction with life than very poor people do，even within wealthy nations. He says“There is overwhelming evidence that money buys happiness.”said economist Andrew Oswald of the University of Warwick in England. The main debate，he said，is how strong the effect is.

Oswald recently reported a study of Britons who won between $ 2000 and $ 250000 in a lottery（彩票拍奖）. As a group，they showed a boost in happiness averaging a bit more than one point on a 36-point scale when surveyed two years after their win，compared to their levels two years before they won.

Daniel Kahneman，a Nobel-Prize winner and Princeton economist，and colleagues，recently declared that the notion that making a lot of money will produce good overall mood is“mostly illusory”. They noted that in one study，members of the high-income group were almost twice as likely to call themselves“very happy”as people from households with incomes below $ 2000. But other studies，rather than asking for a summary estimate of happiness，follow people through the day and repeatedly record their feelings. These studies show less effect of income on happiness，Kahneman and colleagues said.

There is still another twist to the money-happiness story. Even though people who make $ 150000 are considerably happier than those who make $ 40000，it’s not clear why，says psychologist Richard E. Lucas of Michigau Sate University.

Researchers conclude that any effect of money on happiness is smaller than most daydreamer assume.“People exaggerate how much happiness is bought by an extra few thousand，”Oswald said.“The quality of relationships has a far bigger effect than quite large rise in salary...It’s much better advice，if you’re looking for happiness in life，to try to find the right husband or wife than to try to double your salary.”

Sometimes a book can help change history. One book that certainly did was Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was a book that spoke out against slavery.

In the South, many people were very angry at the people in the North. By 1861 the two parts of the country were at war. The Civil War, which lasted until of cease, was made to happen by many things. Yet Uncle Tom’s Cabin surely played a part. Stowe met President Linclon in 1862. As Linclon took her hand, he said, “So you are the woman who starred the big war.”

Last year, I went WWOOFing （Willing Workers on Organic Farms) at a beautiful organic farm

Last year, I went WWOOFing (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) at a beautiful organic farm in La Réunion. With WWOOFing, volunteers exchange their time and work for food and accommodation. I slept in a cabin in the woods with hedgehogs(刺猬) digging about in the bushes, all different coloured birds singing in the morning and endless rows of palm trees offering shade from the sun.

For me, one of the best ways to get to know a new place is to work with the land, live with the locals and share meals together. This is why I absolutely love WWOOFing. It has got to be one of the best ways to travel. It is a mutually beneficial exchange where everyone involved prioritises people and environment above profit. You get the time and space to deepen a connection with local communities and nature.

There is a lot to learn and each farm has its own unique way of doing things, depending on the environment, climate and soil. At the farm in La Réunion we planted palm trees to harvest the core of the trunk which can be eaten in salads. Before staying with the farm I had only eaten heart of palm from cans which were nothing in comparison to the real thing, fresh from the ground. When potting up the very beginnings of the palm trees, I felt grateful to be a part of the start of the trees&39; cycle. I was filled with awe that something so small could grow into something so big and strong.

We also did lots of weeding, which helped me to get to know all kinds of different plants, to be able to identify which ones we could use as herbs/medicine/in salads and which were seen as uneatable. I also got to harvest pineapples and guava fruit(番石榴) to make jams which will be sold at the local market.

Of course, not everyone is able to travel far away into the field. The great thing about the skill-share philosophy behind WWOOFing is that it’s something we can all do from our own backyard. The focus shifts from money to how we can best support each other in our communities.
